You start with a closed square, hexagon, or octagon laying planks flat.

The second layer will be placed on top bisecting the first one.

Then, with each successive layer, you move the Planks a little bit (about 5 millimeters) outwards.

Eventually, you will come to a point where you cannot move further out or else the pieces will topple. So you may now build straight upward.
